Truffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Printable)

A luxurious twist on the classic with Gruyère cheese, truffle oil, and perfectly golden, crispy sourdough bread.

# What You Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sourdough bread or artisan bread

→ Cheese

02 - 4.2 oz Gruyère cheese, grated or thinly sliced

→ Spreads & Oils

03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
04 - 1 to 2 teaspoons truffle oil, white or black

→ Seasoning

05 - Freshly ground black pepper to taste
06 - Pinch of sea salt, optional

# How-To:

01 - Lay out the bread slices. Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice.
02 - Flip the bread over and drizzle a few drops of truffle oil on the unbuttered side of two slices. Evenly distribute the Gruyère cheese over the truffle oil-drizzled bread slices.
03 - Season the cheese lightly with black pepper and a pinch of salt if desired. Top each with the remaining bread slices, butter side facing out.
04 - Heat a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium-low heat.
05 - Place the sandwiches in the pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and crisp and the cheese is melted. Lower the heat if the bread browns too quickly before the cheese melts.
06 - Remove from the pan and let rest 1 minute. Slice and serve immediately.

# Insider Tips:

01 -
  • It feels indulgent but comes together in the same time it takes to make the regular version.
  • The truffle oil adds a sophisticated edge without any fancy technique or hard to find ingredients.
  • Gruyère melts like a dream and has a nutty richness that makes every bite feel special.
  • You can serve it as a quick lunch or dress it up as an appetizer for guests who will absolutely ask for the recipe.
02 -
  • Keep the heat on medium low or the bread will burn before the cheese has a chance to melt properly.
  • Use real truffle oil, not synthetic—the flavor difference is huge and worth the few extra dollars.
  • Grate or slice your own Gruyère instead of using pre shredded, which often has anti caking agents that prevent smooth melting.
03 -
  • Press gently but consistently with your spatula while grilling to ensure even contact and a uniformly crispy crust.
  • If you're making multiple sandwiches, keep finished ones warm in a low oven while you cook the rest so everyone eats at the same time.
  • Always taste your truffle oil before using it—quality varies wildly and some bottles lose potency over time.
